UKTV WRITING OPPORTUNITY

NEW COMMISSIONING OPPORTUNITY WITH UKTV in association with Comedy 50:50.

UKTV is funding 10 treatments for new half hour comedies for either Dave or Gold by female writers.

From these treatments they are looking to commission at least 3 full scripts and hope that the initiative would lead to at least 1 series commission, and maybe more.

Pitches for Dave should be based on characters navigating the chaos, fun and messiness of life in their 20s. Scripts should aim for shared viewing with a mixed-gender cast that can be female led, and ideally low in concept. Authenticity and relatability are key, as are cultural relevance and emotional truth.

Shows on Gold need to have multi-generational, mixed-gender appeal for family viewing audiences, and tonally are similar to BBC2 and Channel 4. The average viewing age is 40 – 50 and whilst the character spread can be multi-generational, the heart of the piece will probably not be through the POV of the older characters.

To apply:

Please send topline ideas, no longer than 2 paragraphs, to comedy5050@comedy5050.com along with a 5 page writing sample by Friday 26th February.

Any level of experience is welcome and UKTV will provide template treatments for successful applicants.

Due to the volume of responses we anticipate, only successful applicants will be notified by UKTV by Thursday April 1st.

Testimonials from past Grand Scheme Media Introduction to Comedy Courses:

Thank you so much for today’s session with Graham and Mark. They were great. Really helpful and shed loads of knowledge and experience kindly communicated.

I found it incredibly informative and extremely helpful, so interesting to hear your insights on this side of the industry and how emerging writers can best showcase their work.

Thank you so much for an amazing session today! It was really great to have a condensed hit of your combined knowledge and experience.
Thinking about comedy in relation to other parts of the schedule is a real revelation.

Mark and Graham were so generous and comprehensive with their advice.  They blend the comedy writer’s craft knowledge – like distilling and discussing comedy devices to play with – alongside behaviours required by a comedy writer, like around script editing.

Your market insights were so useful – especially the reality check on who buyers for new talent actually are.

It was riveting.
Graham and Mark offered so many practical insights and nuggets of
professional information. The result is that I now feel better equipped to pursue my comedy career.

Thanks for the great Intro to Comedy TV session yesterday.  I found it very insightful and you gave some great tips on the industry and on writing characters and conflict and so forth. It was really motivating and encouraging and just what us new comedy writers need!

Another great course from @grand_scheme.
An absolute steal. Such a targeted, industry specific insight, it really opened my eyes to what I’m doing right, and what I need to work on.

What an amazing workshop from Mark and Graham! Such useful information which I will apply on my script 🙂 Thanks for organising.

One of the easiest recommendations I can do. I did this session recently and it was helpful, insightful and gave a broad view of UK channels from people who really know their stuff. Well worth the sign-up.

Awesome workshop this morning with @grand_scheme.
It packed so much into one course. They run lots of great workshops for writers. Check them out – thank you.

The Funny Women Best Comedy Writer Award With Comedy 50:50 – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Congratulations to Christine Rose who has won The Funny Women Best Comedy Writer Award with Comedy 50:50.

Presented by head judge Rachel Parris at the Funny Women Awards, judges comments included –

“Christine gets the tone of productions well and is able to submit material in a variety of comic voices. She also happens to be very funny.”

“Christine did an incredible job developing and honing the host’s voice, working tirelessly on lines that did them proud. The way they were developed over the series owed everything to Christine’s incredible efforts.”

A huge well done also goes to our runners up – Madeleine Brettingham and Catherine Brinkworth.

The Funny Women Best Comedy Writer Award with Comedy 50:50 has been created to help recognise the women amongst our often unsung heroes of comedy – the gag, sketch and additional material writers of broadcast.

We approached producers of non scripted and topical comedy TV, Radio, Digital and Podcast shows to nominate the 3 female comedy writers that have made the greatest impact on their productions.

Nominations were only accepted from those that have worked directly with the writers and there were no more than  three nominators allowed from any one production. Series and exec producers across all UK channels and platforms in Britain and Ireland nominated 29 incredible comedy writers for  their work on productions including  NewsJack, Don’t Hate The Playaz, 8/10 Cats, Celebability, The Blame Game and New World Order.
